One Earth – One Ocean e.V.
More than 150 million tonnes of plastic waste are floating in the world’s oceans. Alarming amounts are added every year. According to UN studies, by 2050, the weight of plastic waste in the oceans could exceed that of fish. The environmental organization One Earth – One Ocean e.V. has developed a marine litter cleanup concept to remove plastic waste, oil, and chemicals from waters around the globe. It is currently active in 11 countries – from Brazil, Uganda, and Egypt to Europe and countries like Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
The marine litter cleanup involves two types of garbage collection ships: the SeeHamster for inland waters and the SeeKühe for coastal regions and seas. These vessels collect plastic, sort it by type, and process it. The clean, sorted plastic can then be recycled into new products. Generating energy and fuel from plastic waste is also being considered.
Through its work, One Earth – One Ocean e.V. helps reduce health threats to humans and animals caused by polluted waters and also alleviates economic impacts (e.g. from plastic in fishing nets, cooling systems, or desalination plants).
